Ginger

Ginger consists of the fresh or dried roots of Zingiber officinale. The ginger plant is an erect perennial that
grows to a height of one to three feet. The stem is surrounded by the sheathing bases of the two-ranked leaves.
A club-like spike of yellowish, purple-lipped flowers has showy greenish yellow bracts beneath.

Ginger, which has been cultivated for thousands of years in both China and India, reached the West at
least two thousand years ago. It was recorded as being subject to a Roman tax in the second century after
being imported via the Red Sea to Alexandria.

An intake of ginger stimulates circulation and warms the inner organs: the lungs, stomach, spleen,
heart and kidneys.
