Ginkgo Biloba
At around 200 million years, the Ginkgo is the oldest species of tree in the world. Individual trees can
live for several hundred years – there are 300-year-old Ginkgo trees in London. The Ginkgo tree originates
from China, where it was often planted outside temples because the tree, with its graceful, calming aura,
was believed to ensure a long, healthy life. The Ginkgo tree is sacred to the Buddhist faith. It can reach a
height of 15 metres, and is often very straight and graceful in appearance. The leaves are heart-shaped
and tend to undulate, giving a fine play of light and shade in the crown of the tree.
Ginkgo Biloba is one of the most thoroughly researched natural medicines.
Ginkgo Biloba contains a high amount of active flavonoids. Flavonoids are bioactive compounds found in fruits,
vegetables, tea and herbs.
Ginkgo Biloba is most famously used to improve short-term memory. Other reported benefits include improved
blood circulation.
